Frits Thaulow
The famous Norwegian painter possible is responsible
for this small work of art. It certainly shows some skills
but at first glance we tended not to believe this work to be
from his hand. However after having read his biography,
it appears that he died in 1906 in Volendam! Several
painters made their stay in hotel Spaander so it could
be that Thaulow stayed there as well for some time.
Work on Paper. Dimensions: 15 / 24,5 cm.
The signature that in fact says "Frits Thaulou" ???
However by having seen his signature in "Annuel des
Arts" we discovered that was the way he signed his work.
It has become a tradition that the artist who stayed in this
hotel payed their stay with a work of art…
Presented here are some signatures by Frits Thaulow done
in pencil and found in "Annuel des Arts" which is an
international guide for Auction Results - Frank van Wilder.
And presented here is the text: a hotel Spaander Voledam.
It is worth the trouble to take a look at his bigger works
as the expression of the water is phenomenal. Together
with his stay at hotel Spaander we are able to tell that
Frits Thaulow died in Volendam unexpectedly in 1906.
He was the teacher of the world famous Edvard Munch.
In order to do some more investigations we decided
to put the watercolour out of its' frame. Besides
being able to make better pictures you are able to
study the paper being used and watermarked in this
case. The even more interesting things to explore
are the stamp on the back that seems to say " H S"
(stands for hotel Spaander ??) Alas, Hotel Spaander
never answered our mail and most likely they do
not have a sufficient answer as well...
Pierre Thevenet (1870 - 1937)
A beautiful winter landscape that has the elements Thevenet
is known for. As his use of paint sometimes is somewhat lean,
his working with thicker paint pays off in tis case. Certainly
one of his better works to our believe. At his best his style
reminds us of Maurice Utrillo: Childish in a kind of way but
the emotion is there as well. Gouache on paper.
Dimensions: 28 / 40 cm.
A detail of this fine work that shows his working with
the paint in this case more exactly. Simply great.
One must always make a distinction between putting a
signature in paint or with a pencil or ink as is the case here.
This signature is spot on, no doubt.
Gilberte Thomas
A work by Gilberte Thomas and as Siamese
catlovers we simply had to buy it.
Work on paper. Dimensions: 18 / 25 cm.
Henri Thomas (Born 1930)
The artist Henri Thomas probably must have been
made this for an invitation as the back of this work on paper
states. One way or another Thomas seems to make a statement
about the presentation of horses in a circus being somewhat
unnatural. This should have been a big one on canvas!
And indeed the artist proclaimed this to be study for a
bigger work. Work on paper. Dimensions: 16 / 25 cm.
More than often Thomas signed his works only with
"Thomas". Just compare it to the next ones exposed here.
We E-mailed this artist and received a confirmation from
him being a work made in 1960.
In order to study the typical horse expression this
work has been depicted here just for comparisons
as in a lot of works of Henri Thomas the horse
plays a role. One way or another this painter
lets us take a look inside the leg of a horse as
he paints the muscles in a provocative way.
